Pollution peak : driving or not ?

You probably already experienced that a pollution peak commonly known as « smog » obliged you to reduce your speed to 90 km/h on the Brussels ring road as well as on the highways in Flanders and Wallonia.  This concerns measures designed to counter smog taken at level 1 intervention threshold.  As from 01/01/09, the Brussels-Capital Region has added a level 2 and 3 to combat this phenomenon in the capital:

Orange flag : Level 1 intervention

- Every other day, vehicles with number plates ending in even or odd numbers will not be allowed to drive in Brussels.  The zero will be considered an even number.  The ring road is not affected by this restriction.

- Public transport (MIVB/STIB) will be expanded and free of charge.

- Vehicles with high environmental performance are exempt from this rule.  Similarly, this measure does not apply to emergency vehicles and vehicles for people transport and waste collection.

Red flag : Level 3 intervention

- All vehicles except emergency vehicles and vehicles for public transport are prohibited from circulating.
- Public transport (MIVB/STIB) will be expanded and free of charge.

Comment: This seldom occurs.
