Too many sick cars on our roads
The GOCA, a group of authorised companies for technical inspection, sounds the alarm: in 2008, 750.000 cars failed the MOT-test (technical inspection). The problems are numerous: problems with the brakes, the suspension, the lighting or the exhaust fumes.
The findings are alarming, especially given the numerous adverse effects. Apart from his own safety and the safety of his passengers, the driver also puts the safety of other road users at risk. Another consequence, in times of increasing talk about “green” driving, is the negative impact of a poorly maintained car on the environment.
FEDERAUTO, the Belgian Trade Association for the Automotive Trade and Repair and Related Branches, reacts to this announcement. As one out of five vehicles reveals serious shortcomings, FEDERAUTO wants to have the "Think about your health" campaign extended. It urged Belgian drivers in 2007 to have the main mechanical parts of their vehicle checked for free at their local garage or tyre centre.
FEDERAUTO also pleaded with our leading bodies for a VAT rate of 6% for the auto maintenance and repair sector. The Economic and Social Committee sees here an effective way to reduce the number of road accidents and therefore advised in favour of this proposal.
The recommended periods between two services are becoming longer and garage owners get fewer opportunities to inspect a vehicle and warn its owner about possible technical problems. That’s why Arval recommends its drivers to strictly observe the maintenance terms.
