Purchase or hand-in - Frequently Asked Questions

Purchase or hand-in

What should I do when returning my vehicle?

The vehicle must be clean and returned with the official documents, the accessories and the keys. The tank does not need to be full. The vehicle can always be returned with summer tyres. Between October 1st and April 30th inclusive, it can also be returned with winter tyres.

You can find more information in our restitution guide.

I wish to buy back my leased vehicle. How does it work?

If you are interested in buying back your lease vehicle, fill in and send us this form. We will calculate the buyback price, which we will send you by email.

When can I request a buyback price?

Three months before the contract expires, or three months before the date on which your new lease vehicle is delivered.

I have accepted the buyback offer that Arval sent me. What are the steps to complete now to finalise this purchase?

The procedure involves the official driver of the vehicle for the duration of the leasing contract and the future buyer of the vehicle at the end of the leasing contract.

Only six steps and the vehicle is yours!

Step 1. Click on the button “accept the offer” in the email that you will receive from usedcar@arval.be.

Step 2. Send us the offer document with the buyer’s details as well as a copy of the front and back of the buyer’s identity card if he/she is a private individual.

Step 3. Arval will then send the buyer a purchase order to send back to us once it has been accepted and signed.

Stap 4. Arval must receive the payment five weeks before the date on which the new owner takes over the car. The payment needs a notification of

  • the registration number;
  • and the buyer’s name.

Once the payment has been received, Arval will send the driver the following by registered mail:

  • a document entitling the vehicle to a free technical inspection;
  • the second part of the registration certificate.

Step 5. The driver will ensure that the car has undergone the compulsory technical inspection for the sale. He/she must book an appointment at an approved test centre for this. A list will be provided.

  • Once the car has passed the technical inspection, the registration application document should be sent to the buyer, who will present it to his/her insurer. Please note, the registration application is only valid for two months!
  • The driver must then send a copy of the Car-Pass and the notice of de-registration to usedcar@arval.be.

  • If the buyer is a private individual and he/she wishes to benefit from the Touring breakdown cover, he/she must send the new registration number to usedcar@arval.be.

Step 6. The file is then closed with Arval, who will send it to the buyer:

  • the purchase invoice
  • a document with instructions to follow in the case of a warranty.

Our maintenance department will also send an email to the buyer and the tyre centre confirming the release of the set of winter or summer tyres linked to this vehicle by the former leasing contract. The buyer can then arrange an appointment with the tyre centre to pick up this set.

Do I have to return the vehicle if I want to buy it back?

No. In the event of a purchase, you keep the leasing vehicle until the end of the buyback procedure.

Do I have to have the technical inspection carried out in order to buy back my vehicle?

Yes. You have to have the technical inspection carried out, which is compulsory for the sale of your lease vehicle.

I have received a notice for the annual technical inspection, can I ask for a technical inspection for a sale to be done instead?

If the annual technical inspection is due before the technical inspection for a sale, you have to have both done. However, if the annual technical inspection is due after the technical inspection for a sale, you only have to have the sale inspection done.

What should I do if the vehicle gets a red card for the technical inspection?

If the vehicle is given a red card, you must contact Arval and provide a copy of the technical inspection document. You should also ask your car dealer to carry out a diagnostics test and submit a repair request to Arval. Arval will take care of the approval and the cost of the repair. If there is a major fault that would be too expensive to repair, it will be possible to cancel the sale and be reimbursed.

Can I keep the Arval registration number or will I have to re-register the vehicle?

No, it is not possible to keep the Arval registration number. You must re-register the vehicle in your own name.

The vehicle has some damage to the bodywork, will it be repaired before the purchase?

Any repairs of accidental damage must be done during the leasing contract and under the conditions of the insurance contract. No repair is provided for as part of the vehicle buyback at the end of the contract.

Can I have maintenance done on the vehicle?

Yes, if the dashboard notifies you that maintenance is required. The maintenance will be approved by our maintenance department. When booking the appointment, you must inform the garage that it concerns a buyback.

Can I swap over the winter/summer tyres?

Yes, if Arval has invited you to swap the tyres.

I have an appointment at the tyre centre to swap the tyres, can I collect my stored tyres?

Yes, but only once you have received the email from Arval requesting the release of the tyres and once your vehicle has been confirmed as having been paid for.

What to do if the vehicle is declared lost or stolen following an accident?

Any accidental damage must be declared according to the insurance conditions. If the vehicle is declared a total loss, it will be possible to cancel the sale and for the buyer to be reimbursed.

I have given back the vehicle, can I still buy it back?

Yes, but an additional fee of EUR 500 excl. VAT will be added to the offer that you were sent.

I have a buyer for the vehicle, can I add my margin onto the sales price and invoice for it through Arval?

No, the offer that you have received is fixed. Arval cannot act as an intermediary for the sale.

My insurer is asking me for a proof of no claims. Can you provide me with that?

Yes, if your car is insured by Arval. In that case, you can request your proof of no claims from our insurance department by email or by phone number 02 240 01 99.

Does a vehicle that is bought back from Arval come with a warranty?

If the vehicle is bought by a private individual, the vehicle comes with a one-year warranty. Once the buyback procedure has been completed, the buyer will receive all the instructions concerning this warranty by email.

Does the vehicle bought back from Arval come with breakdown cover?

If the vehicle is bought by a private individual and he/she would like breakdown cover, he/she must notify us of the new registration number. He/she will then be able to benefit from breakdown cover through Touring.

You can check what is offered by the Touring breakdown cover here. (The site is available in Dutch and French.)

I do not wish to accept the buyback offer, I would like to return my vehicle. What should I do?

You should follow the instructions in place for returning your vehicle with your employer.

Do I have to change the tyres before returning my vehicle?

The vehicle can always be returned with summer tyres. Between October 1st and April 30th inclusive, it can also be returned with winter tyres.

What is a remote inspection?

During a remote inspection, an independent expert will inspect the vehicle at the end of the contract to check for any potential damage before it is returned. This is defined in the contract with the employer. The inspection will take place at a place and time to suit you.

How can I request a remote inspection?

You can submit your request by phone or by email. If you book an appointment with the garage for the delivery of your new vehicle, you must always allow an additional five working days. This period is required for organising the inspection.
